He stars in Fox 2000's "In Her Shoes (2005)", written by Susannah Grant and directed by Curtis Hanson , with Shirley MacLaine, Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette. He starred as Detective Lieutenant Max Cavanaugh on NBC's "Crossing Jordan" (2001)". Howard is perhaps best known for his performance as a street-savvy teacher in the classic drama "White Shadow, The" (1978)", a role he "re-created" in real life as a master class teacher at the American Repertory Theatre Institute and as an instructor at Harvard University and Harvard Law School. His teaching experience helped form the basis of his book, ACT NATURAL How to Speak to Any Audience, published by Random House, 2003.
In 1968, two years into the three-year program at the Yale School of Drama, he accepted a small role on Broadway in Neil Simon's Promises, Promises. He then originated the role of Thomas Jefferson in the Tony-winning musical 1776, directed by Peter Hunt, receiving a Theatre World award. Howard later earned a Tony for his work as a young gym coach at a Catholic boys school in Child's Play, and has starred on Broadway in Seesaw, The Norman Conquests, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and the national tour of Equus.
His feature-film debut was in "The Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon (1970)" opposite Liza Minnelli. Film credits include "1776 (1972)", "Such Good Friends (1971)", "Clear and Present Danger (1994)", "Net (1995)" and "At First Sight (1999)".
Starring roles in the TV series "Adam's Rib" (1973)" and "Manhunter, The" (1974)" followed. He became firmly established in the public's mind as Coach Reeves on MTM's prestigious "White Shadow, The" (1978)", a series he co-created based on his own experiences as the only white player on his high school basketball team. In the following years, he co-starred on the series "It's Not Easy" (1983)", "Colbys, The" (1985)" and "Dynasty" (1981)". Among Howard's other series, miniseries and TV movie credits are recurring roles in "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2000)" and "Practice, The" (1997)", "Arli$$" (1996)", "West Wing, The" (1999)", "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town: JonBenét and the City of Boulder (2000) (TV)", "Thorn Birds, The" (1983) (mini)", "Father Damien: The Leper Priest (1980) (TV)", "Victims (1982) (TV)", "He's Not Your Son (1984) (TV)", "Country Girl, The (1982) (TV)", and "Murder in New Hampshire: The Pamela Wojas Smart Story (1991) (TV)".
He won an Emmy for the on-camera narration of "Body Human: Facts for Boys, The (1980) (TV)" and his voice can be heard on more than 30 best-selling books on tape.
A kidney transplant success (the gift of longtime friend Jeannie Epper), Howard works with the National Kidney Foundation in their efforts to encourage people to donate their organs.
He resides in Los Angeles with his wife, stuntwoman Linda Howard (Linda Fetters), and their dog, Shadow. His birthday is March 28.
