Plot Summary: Robert and Katherine Thorn seem to have all this. He is the US ambassador to Italy, and they want for nothing in her lives except a thing: They do not have children. If Katharine has a deadly born child, Robert is brought near by a priest in the hospital which point out to the fact that he takes a healthy newborn child whose mother has died just during the birth. Without telling his wife, he agrees in such a way, but on shifting to London to, foreign events - and the evil-announcing warnings before a priest - make him think that the child whom he took of this Italian hospital is bad in person.
Robert und Katherine Thorn scheinen all das zu haben. Er ist der US-Botschafter nach Italien, und sie wollen für nichts in ihren Leben außer einem Ding: Sie haben Kinder nicht. Wenn Katharine ein tot geborenes Kind hat, wird Robert von einem Priester im Krankenhaus genähert, die darauf hinweisen, dass er einen gesunden Neugeborenen nimmt, dessen Mutter gerade in der Geburt gestorben ist. Ohne seiner Frau zu erzählen, stimmt er zu so, aber nach dem Verschieben nach London zu, fremde Ereignisse - und die unheilverkündenden Warnungen vor einem Priester - bringen ihn dazu zu glauben, dass das Kind, das er von diesem italienischen Krankenhaus nahm, leibhaftig schlecht ist.
