Plot Summary: A simple-minded gardener called the chance has spent his whole life in Washington D. C. House of an old man. If the man dies, chance on the street is issued without knowledge of the world except what he has found out from the television. After a run in with a saloon he ends a guest of a woman (eve) and her husband Ben, a high-powered, but sicklyy enterpriser. Now called Chauncey Gardner, chance becomes a friend and confidant Ben, and an unlikely political insider.

Wenn der Mann stirbt, wird Chance auf der Straße ohne Kenntnisse der Welt außer ausgestellt, was er aus dem Fernsehen erfahren hat. Nach einem Lauf in mit einer Limousine endet er ein Gast einer Frau (Vorabend) und ihr Mann Ben, ein einflussreicher, aber kränklicher Unternehmer. Jetzt genannt Chauncey Gardner, Chance wird Freund und Vertraute Ben, und einem unwahrscheinlichen politischen Eingeweihten.
