Plot Summary: Cal Trask is particularly unfortunate boy. He sees as the black sheep of the family and is always competing with his brother Aron, who seems to be almost perfect in every way. Aron is also the father's favorite and Cal desperately wants his father's love and affection. It is the period before America's entry into World War I, and these are tumultuous times. After his father lost most of his fortune trying to ship refrigerated lettuce to New York, Cal decides to speculate on a crop of beans and made a small fortune, but he soon realizes that he can not buy his father loves so much. Cal's discovery that his mother is alive - Aron and he was told that she had died - and she is a woman leads to a final, tragic results for all three of the men Trask.
Cal Trask é particularmente infeliz rapaz. Ele vê como a ovelha negra da família e está sempre competindo com seu irmão Aron, que parece ser quase perfeito em todos os sentidos. Aron é também o pai do favorito e Cal desesperadamente deseja que seu pai o amor e carinho. É o período que antecede a entrada da América I Guerra Mundial e estes são tempos tumultuosos. Após o pai perde a maior parte de sua fortuna tentando navio refrigerado alface para Nova York, decide Cal para especular sobre um cultivo de feijão e faz uma pequena fortuna, mas ele logo percebe que ele não pode comprar seu pai ama tanto. Cal a descoberta de que sua mãe está viva - Aron e ele foi-nos dito que ela tinha morrido - e que ela é uma senhora leva a um final, trágico resultado para todos os três do Trask homens.
